It was a decade when Mahindra launched the Thar that was being well known for it's offroad capabilities and also the jeep that was used by the Indian army in the army green avatar that many of us might also have seen in movies where protagonists used to drive them.The time went by and then Mahindra had decided to bring the Mahindra Thar 2020 in a modern avatar that will have modern technology and a better offroad capability which is expected to launch soon in the Indian markets under mission 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
Exterior
Focussing on how the Mahindra Thar 2020 can retain it's legendary design langauge the front gets a mix of the classical front grilles that represents Mahindra's design language of the early decades.There is however no projector headlamps on the offer as it still offers the older halogen headlamps which is honestly a nice thing as adding projector headlamps would made it look very overworked.There are also skid plates on the offer that gives it a pure Suvish feel from the outside.
The side of the Thar 2020 looks now mind boggling due to which it will create an excitement to give it the beans in the minds of all the enthusiasts who are in love with the Thar.There is an option of 18 inches alloy wheels with wider section tires however in the adventure trim there will be an option of the 16 inchers.
There would be several roof options that will be available which include a hardtop,softtop and a convertible version.Whenever the Thar 2020 is being seen from the rear it's spare wheel mounting position is something which is a great job that Mahindra has done.The traditional halogen taillamps have now been replaced by the modern LED tail lamps that are now very much better than the old Thar.
Interior
When we compare the New Mahindra Thar 2020 with the previous generation there would be many changes in the interior that we get to see which includes Mahindra's easter eggs which is also there beneath the co driver side aircon vent representing Mahindra's offroad capability.For enhanced comfort on your way to the long journeys there is an option of bucket seats.
There is so much of technology on the offer which includes a new touchscreen that comes with offroad monitoring system and blue sense application.On this touchscreen the power and torque can also be monitored.The steering wheel gets audio and phone controls and now for long cruising journeys the cruise control is now also being offered.By replacing the analogue instrumental panel there is now an option of semi digital instrument cluster.One thing that could have been better is giving power window controls on the doors itself for an enhanced convenience.
Engine and performance
Besides the 2.2 mHawk diesel engine that churns out 130ps of power and 300nm of torque there is also an option of 2.0 litre mStallion petrol engine that churns out 150ps of power and 320nm of torque.Both petrol and diesel engines now come with manual and automatic transmissions and now 4 wheel drive is a standard offering on all the variants.
